Colleen Paul Hoerner has been committed to the challenge of painting in the pastel medium for a number of years, primarily with vibrant color in a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits, wildlife and architecture. Using both hard and soft pastels, she describes her style as “contemporary realism.”
An artist since childhood, Colleen grew up in St. Paul, a small town in central Nebraska, named for her great-grandfather. After moving west to Colorado, she graduated from the University of Colorado, magna cum laud, with a BFA. Following several years of working in colored pencil and watercolor, Hoerner switched to pastel over a decade ago and has worked in the medium ever since.
With a goal to communicate, via pastel, an emotional connection to her painting image, Colleen uses a heightened sense of color, strong value contrast, design and content, resulting in a universal appeal.
Great art connects the emotion of the artist to the emotion of the viewer.
Colleen’s award-winning paintings are exhibited throughout Colorado and hang in public and private collections across the country. She is a signature member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, and is affiliated with the Boulder Pastel Painters, Boulder Art Association and numerous other societies. Her work has appeared The Artist's Magazine, The Pastel Journal, American Art Collector, The Best of American Pastel Artists, and The Best of Worldwide Artists In Charcoal, Pastel, and Pencil.
